Description

Robinia wooden pole 4.00 metre for permanent stretch tent setups

This 4.00 metre robinia wooden pole is built for stretch tents that stay up. Robinia, also known as black locust, is naturally hard and highly rot-resistant, so the pole lasts outdoors for years without impregnation or varnish. At 16 to 18 cm in diameter and around 100 kg each, this is not a pole you put up and take down every weekend. It suits hospitality venues with a permanent canopy, campsites and holiday parks, terraces and gardens.

When to choose robinia, and when to choose something else

In a permanent setup the pole has a different job. It carries the tension of the fabric year-round, takes wind and rain in every season, and sits in or just above the ground rather than on a base plate. That calls for a timber that does not depend on being stored dry between jobs.

If you put the tent up and take it down regularly, robinia is the wrong choice. Look at the varnished eucalyptus centre pole in 4.00 metres instead: light enough for two people to move, and supplied with a top cap. If you want untreated natural timber for mobile use, the chestnut centre pole in 4.00 metres is the obvious option, supplied with a rubber cap.

Anchoring and installation

The pole is peeled, sanded and not pointed: it is not driven into the ground but placed in a hole. We recommend a depth of at least 1 metre, then fixing it firmly with rapid-set concrete. That keeps the structure stable on surfaces where pegs or ground anchors are not enough, such as terraces, gardens and paved or landscaped ground.

Please note: the pole caps, top caps and pole socks in our range are made for 51 and 76 mm poles and do not fit this pole.
