Our range of ground anchors had three sizes: 600 x 20, 1000 x 30 and 1000 x 35 mm. A fourth one now joins them. The 800 x 25 mm tent peg fills the gap between the smallest size and the one-metre sizes.
Why a size in between?
The 600 x 20 mm is light and quick to drive in, but reaches only around 86 kg of pull-out force. The one-metre sizes pass 400 kg, but weigh 6 to 8 kg each. Across a set of thirty pegs, the 800 x 25 mm saves ninety kilos or more.
At around 267 kg of pull-out force for 3 kg of weight, the in-between size sits exactly in the middle: more than three times the hold of the small size, at half the weight of the standard size.
Where this size is used
Mostly in the rental trade. If you set up and break down every week, you look at something different from someone putting up a tent for a single weekend: how many times a peg goes into the van, into the ground and out again. On normal grass, where a full metre is not needed but the small size gives too little hold, this in-between size is a practical choice. Less weight per set, and it fits the same peg puller for 20 to 35 mm pegs.
Setting up your own garden party or wedding? The same argument applies: less lifting for the same job.
When not to choose it
If the tent stays up longer, or the ground is loose or sandy, choose the 1000 x 30 mm (403 kg) or the 1000 x 35 mm (463 kg). Depth and pull-out force then matter more than weight.
